What is Wheel Throwing?
Wheel throwing refers to the act of creating ceramicware using the wheel of a potter, a moving platform that allows artisans to center, pull the clay, and shape it into various containers like cups, bowls, vessels, and even plates. Contrary to hand built techniques using a wheel, potters’ wheels provide an equilibrium and speed that allows for the creation of a seamless dance between hand and clay.

The Step by Step Process
Before the wheel can begin spinning, clay has to be wedged properly. This removes air bubbles and creates an even, smooth appearance.
Centering is the most important stage of wheel throwing. The potter centers the clay on the spinning wheel by using force and accuracy, giving a firm foundation to shape the clay.
The Form is opened. When the Form is centered in the clay, it is moved to the center using your thumbs to form the bottom of the clay.
Shaping and pulling with damp hands and a careful application of pressing, the clay’s walls are pushed upwards and outwards to form the shape you want, whether it’s a vase, a bowl, or a cup.
Trimming and refining. After the item dries to a hard leather and is cut to make it more defined, it is then incorporated with details like a foot ring or designs.
Drying and firing. The workpiece has to be completely dry before it can be bisque fired inside the kiln. Then, it’s glazed before being fired again for a long lasting, stunning, gorgeous finish.
