Step By Step Tutorial

Step 1

My kids always sketch out their ideas when they are making canvas art. It’s much simpler for them to draw on their drawings than to simply draw the picture they want to create. We employ an oil pastel directly on the canvas to accomplish this. My children and I add their own ideas to the artwork. In this way they get an overview of what they’re working on and discuss what they think should be added. It’s a great opportunity to get them working together.

Step 2

Next, the paint comes out! We use acrylic paints to fill in the drawings. I usually help with this part by filling in the empty space. I encourage my kids to use one color at a time to keep it from turning into a large brown canvas.

Step 3

This is what we ended up with. Pretty good just as it is but I did add a few more touches on my own.

Step 4

With a foam brush and a rag, I blotted white paint on top and rubbed it in to soften some areas of our painting for kids. I also went over a few details with gold paint. This is an optional step.

Step 5

We all had to sign our art, of course!

Final result

This is one of my new favorites. We went with an ocean theme to go into my son’s nautical themed bedroom. I love that this captures my children’s little drawings at these precious ages and that I get to look at them on the wall each and every day. It just makes me happy.
