Top Attractions On A Ras Al Khaimah Tour From Dubai

1. Al Dhayah Fort

Dhayah fort is listed on the UNESCO world heritage tentative list and stands as a shining beacon in the barren mountains. It is the central point of the lush oasis. It offers stunning views of the mountain tops through palm trees, verdant land, neighboring Oman, and the ocean.

Amid the backdrop of soaring mountains, the area of Dhayah is an extremely fertile region and was settled around the 3rd millennium BC. A conical hill, situated at the outskirts of the palm growing areas and at the base of the mountains, serves as a natural defense to protect the oasis. People have used it since prehistoric times for settlement and fortification. It is now crowned by the 19th century fortress, built on the foundations of older buildings. It is the only fort on the hill that remains in the UAE. Dhayah fort played a major role as the last bastion of resistance during the British offensive in 1819 against the tribal groups of RAK. The tribes that defended themselves felt secure against the British attackers because the British cannons could not reach the hilltop fort. However, the situation changed after the British finally decided to relocate their most powerful cannon near the bottom of the mountain. Following a difficult trip out of the ship, through muddy mangrove swamps, only two shots would be required to get the tribes of the area to yield. In the following years, the current fort was constructed of mud brick, stone, and mortar over the remnants of the former fort’s site. The fort was restored in the late 1990’s. Dhayah fort served as a temporary defensive structure during an attack on the oasis.

Ras Al Khaimah National Museum

The National museum is situated within the historic fort (Husn) in RAK. The museum was founded in the 18th century. It was originally built as a defense structure; the structure has been the home of the Quwasim family for the last 20 years of the century. By 1987, it had become a museum. Nowadays, many rooms that exhibit the historical, ethnographic, and archeological materials related to the Emirate are open to visitors. The collections and artifacts are donated by the ruling Quwasim family. Excavated archaeological sites and a variety of scientific research initiatives have provided additional data and details on the culture and history.

The fort was built with coral stone. Though it’s lightweight and highly insulating, coral stone has excellent thermal properties. It keeps structures cool in summer and warm in winter. Its base and the lower portions were built about 1800. The remaining tower was built following the British assaults of 1819.
